Balka for 15mm Flames of War - $190
(Completed 2/07)

For this piece, the customer requested a 4 piece modular set that models a Balka for his Eastern Front campaign. A Balka is a dry gully found in Russia which features steep sides covered in vegetation.

The customer requested openings to the gully on each side of the board and that the boards have variations and curves allowing for multiple configurations. This set was to feature sloping sides and so was based on plywood for added strength. Each board measures 30 cm x 50 cm providing a full 120 cm long gully when placed together. The gully is 5 cm deep and ranges in width between 6 cm and 11 cm. This customer also requested a custom flocking blend.

To add to the tactical variations and the overall visual appeal of the piece, I added a few clusters of rocks with vegetation on each board as well as foliage within the Balka itself to complete the look. Because this model is intended for use with 15mm models, the vegetation and rocks were scaled down slightly to better match the models.

*Addition - Balka End cap - $50*
The customer later requested an end cap to the balka. The final 3 pictures show the end cap that was created to match the balka.

Gently Sloped Hills - $45
(Completed 2/07)

These hills were requested to accompany the Balka terrain set. Since this customer uses 15mm models on broad bases, which are much less prone to tipping as compared to Games Workshop Models, gently sloping hills were a more realistic option. Because the hills taper at the edges the bottoms were reinforced with plywood to protect the corners.

These hills were finished with matching flock to the Balka and the largest hill allowed for a very natural change in elevation as seen in the second photo below.
